“…You don’t know how to cook fried rice?”

“W-well my attempts have failed so far…” Hinata muttered, prompting a laugh from his senior.

“Somehow I feel you didn’t use a recipe for that Shoyou” Suga joked, laughing more as Hinata’s reddened face gave him an answer.

The reason why Suga was in his kitchen in the first place was due to the resident tangerine calling him over the night before with a sense of urgency. Said urgency had stemmed from the urge to make at least something for Kageyama since they either went out or ordered for the Lunch/Dinner dates.

It was currently a pretty well-kept secret that the duo had hit it off relatively recently, though it wasn’t a great surprise to those who knew. Of course, they didn’t plan on keeping it a secret forever but they agreed that it would be better to figure things out in peace first.

And so one offhand remark, a realization, and the ignition of a burning passion saw Hinata attempt to make dinner for him and Kageyama.

Granted he initially hadn’t the slightest idea of what to cook, to begin with, and only when Hinata asked his mom did he truly get going.

Hinata had decided on Shrimp Fried Rice with a side of Teriyaki Chicken. Was it absolutely audacious? Yes, did he still plan on doing it? Also yes.

And so, with a rough idea of what to do and how to do it, Hinata set off, determined to set up a dinner date for him and his boyfriend.

And that was where trouble immediately sprung up.

He had given his first attempt at cooking the rice the previous evening which had resulted in…a questionable outcome. The rice itself had been alright but a culmination of too many ingredients and too quick of a cooking time meant that Hinata’s small test batch (something he had the foresight to do at least) was, to put it simply, lacking .

And in line with Hinata’s nature, he tried again, now with former experience to base it off which was marginally more successful but alas still far from being completely edible. And to think he hadn’t tried his hand at the chicken as of yet.

And so in light of that, he was beyond thankful when Suga had agreed to help him out, made easier by the holiday.

“So you have all the ingredients I presume?” The light-gray-haired senpai asked.

“Mhm, restocked this morning after yesterday,” Hinata said, enthusiastically nodding his head.

“Heh alright then, leave it to your Senpai to do the teaching!” Sugawara said, flashing a hearty smile as Hinata’s enthusiasm seeped into him.

One of the first changes Suga implemented was to actually have them refer to a recipe lest both of them fail this time around. He also made sure that both of them were paying close to the number of ingredients they were putting, the temperature, and other important parts of the cooking process.

As the duo continued on, they exchanged light banter. Mainly little stories of things that happened at school as well as the snide joke thrown in every now and then.

“So Shouyou, I’m admittedly curious as to what you plan to do after this” Suga said, turning to him.

“Hmm, well, since y’know, there’s still a good amount of time left in the afternoon, I could call him over later…” Hinata mused, a thoughtful look currently on his face.

“Oh so if we manage to get this done well, you’re just going to call him over?” Suga asked, intrigued and amused as this was a very Hinata thing to do.

“Mhm, pretty much,” The redhead said, now happily nodding as his brain constructed a somewhat cohesive idea.

“Hehe you do that then…also is that the only thing you intend to cook?” Suga inquisitively asked as they added the final touches to Fried Rice.

“Uh, I was planning on also cooking Chicken Teriyaki,” Hinata answered.

“Oh I love that! I’ll stay around to help you with it in fact” His senior exclaimed and Hinata’s eyes practically lit up, his senpai was great.

2 and a Half Hours Later,

As the afternoon slowly morphed into evening, Hinata felt very proud with what he had managed to do in the intervening time. Under the guidance of Suga, who had left several minutes ago, they had managed a pretty decent dinner and more importantly, one that tasted well.

Hinata was currently laid back on the living room couch as he was going to rest before moving onto the next part of his “grand” plan.

Since his mom had taken Natsu for a play date, which meant the house was his until later on in the evening.

Grinning madly, Hinata jumped back up as the excitement seeped back into him, no use in trying to contain it, he reasoned. After sending Kageyama several texts, he headed to the dining room and began to prepare it for the arrival of his partner. The dining room hadn’t been left in a particularly clean condition and so that along with the living room would need attention.

This was abruptly interrupted when his phone began to ring with the one person he expected to be calling.

“You better make sure that whatever you’ve cooked isn’t going to make me vomit out my insides” Came Kageyama’s voice from the other end.

“First of all rude, and second of all, the last time you ate something from me, your were mostly fine Bakageyama, I would know” Hinata chided, a growing smile beginning to emerge as he continued cleaning up.

“Both of us weren’t alright after that” He pointed out and Hinata had to stifle a chuckle considering, yeah his boyfriend was right.

“Fine, but this time I know that we aren’t going to get stomach aches since I tasted it awhile ago” Hinata said.

“Oh actually using your brain for once, truly a miracle this is” Kageyama mused, the smug smile could practically be heard.

“You are so screwed when you get here” The ginger replied but he did know that this was all inherently light hearted, and had been when they made their feelings for the other known.

“Then I can’t wait, see ya in an hour idiot” Kageyama said, thus ending their quick conversation.

“See you later as well Kageyama” Hinata murmured under his breath, determined to give both of them a good evening when it came to be.

—————

Later That Evening,

Tobio wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from Hinata aside from cuddling on the couch and maybe getting to go to sleep together later on but aside from that, any time at the redhead’s place was a surprise.

He was brought out of his train of thought when fast footsteps were heard on the floor inside following the doorbell being rung.

“Evening Kageyama” Hinata happily chirped before getting on his toes and pressing a kiss to his partner’s cheek.

“Evening to you too dumbass” The setter replied, patting the orange ball of fluff in return.

“Ready to have a great dinner made by yours truly?” He asked as Kageyama entered further into his house.

“I’ll be judging whether it’s great or not” Kageyama pointed out but couldn’t resist the small smile that began to take over. For as many times as they butted heads, called each other rivals and such, it was beginning to boil down to a more lighthearted and fun stance.

Of course they still fought every now and then, mostly on the court, but they also managed to resolve those at their own pace and return to good or even better terms.

Good was also seemingly a correct way of referring to what Hinata had cooked up awhile ago. It at least smelt well as compared to the last time when there was no smell.

“You know, I think you may have actually made something pretty decent” The taller of them mused, looking at the dishes Hinata had made.

“Well you aren’t going to know if you don’t try” Hinata said, as he had already placed food on his plate.

Shrugging, Kageyama did the same and when he had his first mouthful, his eyes widened as he was pleasantly surprised at the taste of the food.

“Heh, see, not bad right?” Hinata enthusiastically asked.

“For once I agree with you on that…” Kageyama said, as he continued to eat.

The duo freely conversed for the duration of dinner with laughs and the occasional under the table kicks being exchanged. Also for the duration of dinner, Kageyama couldn’t but feel an overwhelming sense of happiness from how bright Hinata was. It was infectious to say the least.

Granted he already had been put in a good mood when Hinata had messaged him awhile ago to come over.

The rest of dinner was delicious for Kageyama (though he didn’t say that outright) and the two retired to Hinata’s bedroom afterwards, the dishes disposed of in the sink.

“I’ll let you choose the movie for tonight since it’s your turn,” Hinata said as he handed him the remote.

“Yeah yeah” Kageyama muttered, taking a place behind Hinata and plopping his head on top of his, causing a light grumble about how his orange hair wasn’t a pillow.

“You’re going to choose that?” Hinata asked, eyes sparkling.

“Yeah, we both like this anyways so get comfortable idiot” The taller of the two said and after they shifted around, Kageyama started the movie

The movie agreed on was Princess Mononoke and ever since Hinata had convinced Kageyama to watch a Ghibli movie he had been hooked. This time, the pair were mostly quiet as they watched, like the three other times they had.

And just over three hours later, both of them were on the hinges of sleep, a pillow fight having followed in the wake of the movie.

They had at this point gotten into a position where Kageyama was the big spoon and Hinata, the spoon’d. The Tangerine’s energy had seemingly evaporated when they began to hug and was happily sleeping.

Kageyama though was still somewhat awake and had opened his phone to ask someone a question and continue a conversation from awhile ago.

Kageyama then laid his phone back on the nightstand in time for Hinata to begin mumbling, “Tobio, cuddle more”

Humming in acknowledgement, he looped his arms around Hinata again, a small sigh of pleasure coming from him. Before Kageyama was taken away to sleep, he mused that he could get used to a lifestyle with Shouyou like this.

After all, they were on that path to begin with.
